Māhua, the Hawaiian word for flourishing, evokes a sense of growth, evolvement and coming into one’s full potential. This year marks the 30th anniversary for Hālau o Keikiali`i and we are proud to present a collection of songs and dances that celebrates the path we have taken not only as a Hawaiian dance group, but as practitioners of the Hawaiian culture and innovators of Hawaiian music and performance.
This year’s special celebration pays tribute to Hawai’i Island – home to Keikiali`i’s hula lineage, which stems from Kumu Hula Rae Kahikilaulani Fonseca and Hula Master George Lanakilakekiahiali`i Na`ope. With an exciting mixture of original and traditional compositions and dynamic choreography, we honor the people and places – near and far – that have touched us on our journey over the years. We hope you will join us on this reminiscent tour of our first 30 years and all the extraordinary places to which we have traveled together thus far. We are excited to welcome Keikiali`i students from all over the globe – Japan, Mexico, Spain, Italy, Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, Hawai`i and throughout the U.S. – to the Bay Area to showcase that hula and the spirit of Aloha are indeed universal. We are delighted to have from Maui, Kumu Hula Hōkūlani Holt as story teller and from Hilo, Hawaiian singer-song writer Kainani Kahaunaele!
Lobby doors will open at 3:00pm for a special fundraising hour featuring food, drinks, arts and crafts, and a silent auction.
